Ben Swift from Team SKY and local cycling hero, Nolan Hoffman, hosted a track training session at the Bellville velodrome on 17 Dec 2015. The session was made possible by Sven Thiele, from Hot Chillee, in co-operation with Western Province cycling.

Ben Swift is the 2012 World Scratch race track cycling champion and a successful Grand Tour rider. Nolan is well known for his many victories at Paarl Boxing day, but also took silver at the World Scratch race championship in 2012 – the best result yet at this level by a South African in recent years.

Young and old attended with riders as young as under 10 getting the chance to learn. Swift shared info learned from the time that he started out on the track and applied these workouts to bring freshness and excitement to the group session that was attended by about 40 riders. He underlined the important role that the velodrome plays in developing talent and reminded youngsters that riders such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish come from a track background.

Swift also won silver at the 2012 worlds with Geraint Thomas in the madison plus a silver in the points race. He shared that he had the opportunity as a young rider to ride in up to 3 league events per week in the UK. This meant that youngsters developed the skill sets to become great bike riders early on.
